Never mind whether the US government can tap in to your e.mails, nevertheless computing too has standards, to ensure “secured” and timely delivery and quality of service to the end user.

One such quality certification is Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), which is sine qua non when dealing in transactions with the US government, even if that involves deals with the National Security Agency, USA, which spies over your e.mails!

Only one such local software company, or for that matter  the only company in the services category in the island  has got this certification, ie IFS, an ERP company which is headquartered in Sweden, but which has its biggest R&D operations in Sri Lanka, staffed with 700 IT professionals.

IFS officially obtained the CMMI Level 3 certification in the services sector at a function in Colombo on Thursday (November 24) where the audit was done at a cost of Rs. five million by KPMG.

Jayantha De Silva, Vice President South Asia, speaking at this occasion said that within a short space of five years  Sri Lanka’s IT/BPO industry had grown from a

US$ ($) 60 million industry to a $ 600 million one, recognized as being Sri Lanka’s fifth largest foreign exchange (forex) earner.

IFS in Sri Lanka contributes to more than 10% of that revenue figure.

He said that there are 350 IT/BPO companies in the country.

The industry plans to be the island’s largest forex earner by 2022. For that such certifications are important.

“Quality is a huge differentiator allround,” said De Silva. This is important in the island’s context because of its smallness, he said. Even some local companies are insisting on CMMI certification, he alleged.

IFS in the UK which is CMMI certified services the US defence industry, De Silva said.

USA is Sri Lanka’s biggest market, however those are dealings with the US private sector and not the US Government. Nevertheless IFS, as a provider of software services, is an employee of the US Defence Department.

KPMG’s IT Advisory Services Partner Priyanka Jayatilake in his speech said that CMMI certification caters to three categories: Software acquisitions and development respectively as well as services, the latter category however is not confined to services in the IT sector only, but embraces other disciplines as well, in the CMMI certification process.

He said that additionally 11 other companies in the IT “development” category in the island have had also been CMMI certified.” In the USA 1,582 companies are CMMI certified, in China (1,229) and India (524),” said Jayatilake.
