Forced To Pay For O/L Admissions

By Waruni Karunarathne

The principal of a school in Dalugama in the Kelaniya Education Division has forced students sitting for the O/L examinations to pay Rs. 500/= to sit for O/L exams.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader the General Secretary of Lanka Teacher Services Union (LTSU) Mahinda Jayasinghe said that three O/L classes are at the school and about 120 students are going to sit for the O/L exam this year.

Parents of some students reported that the principal of the school had charged Rs. 500 from each student to sit for the O/L exams.

“When the principal heard about the complaints, she has forced the parents to say that the money was given to her willingly by the parents.

Most of the parents are scared of revealing further information, because they fear that their children will be discriminated by the principal,” Jayasinghe said.

Jayasinghe added that they have already informed the media and the relevant authorities about the incident.

He said the Ceylon Teachers Services Union will send a letter to the Director of Education of the Kalaniya Education Division and the Secretary of Education of the Western Province demanding actions against the principal.
