Unused TV Licences To Be Cancelled

By Indika Sri Aravinda

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) says unused television licences will be cancelled next year.

TRC Director General Anusha Pelpita said that the Media Ministry and the TRC will work towards cancelling the unused licences.

He said that at present there are 24 television channels operating in Sri Lanka an in his view that is too much.

Pelpita says new television frequencies will not be provided in future and strict regulations will be in place for existing TV licence holders.

Already there are requests from television licence holders to transfer their licences to new owners but the TRC insists such requests will not be accommodated.

The Sunday Leader learns that four television licences which have been issued but have gone unused will be cancelled next year.

.In all the Channels during NEWS time ,TELEDRAMA time or any other programme time ,70% is used up for ADVERTISEMENTS. Viewers are bored and disgusted but they are just helpless.
There can be some improvement by eleminating repetitive showing of the same advertisement more than once during a programme.
