New Proposal To UNP Leadership Council

A group of UNP parliamentarians are to present a fresh proposal to the UNP Leadership Council urging the Council to prohibit its members from holding other key positions in the party.
A UNP parliamentarian told The Sunday Leader that this move will give more opportunities for second-tier leaders of the parties, enabling them to hold key responsibilities within the party.
“The proposal will be presented to the Leadership Council in the third week of December and we sincerely hope there will be a favourable response from the council members,” he said.
“Since the Leadership Council is now the supreme decision making body of the party, its members should not hold any other key responsibilities of the party,” the parliamentarian added.
Karu Jayasuriya, Ravi Karunanayake, Lakshman Kiriella, Ruwan Wijewardene, Gamini Jayawickrema Perera, Mangala Samaraweera, Tissa Attanayake and Kabir Hashim are current members of the UNP Leadership Council. Meanwhile, The Sunday Leader also learned that a group of young UNP parliamentarians are planning to hold discussions with Sajith Premadasa as well as with the Leadership Council to get Premadasa re-appointed as a member of the 9 member council.
Although Premadasa initially stepped down from the Leadership Council, the group of MPs are of the view that he should not distance himself from the Leadership Council and the topmost body of the party, given his ability to inspire the grassroots level.
