Muslims Demand Probe

By Indika Sri Aravinda

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has demanded a Presidential Commission to be formed to investigate the atrocities committed against the Muslims in the North.

SLMC General Secretary Hassan Ali told The Sunday Leader that the party has sent a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa demanding the appointment of the Commission. He said that while the Muslim community was not directly affected during the final stages of the war, there has not been any investigation into the murder of some 20,000 Muslims and eviction of thousands from the North during the 30 year war.

Hassan Ali noted that both locally and internationally there has been focus only on the suffering of the Tamil and Sinhalese communities. He said that even the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) mainly looked at the incidents which took place after 2002 and not before that.

“We want even the international community to look at the issues faced by the Muslims in Sri Lanka,” the SLMC General Secretary said.
Hassan Ali noted that while the SLMC operates independently in the North, it works with the Government in the East in order to address Muslim issues in the area.
In 1990 hundreds of Muslims were forced by the LTTE to leave the North within just a few hours.

Is there is political agenda by the SLMC in asking for commission to inquire after so many years back?

  3. Malin

It’s reasonable to ask for a PC to probe into the Muslims who have been displaced by LTTE in their ethnic cleansing terror. Sinhalese also deserves a PC.

While investigating Muslims’ problems, the part played by Muslim Homegauds in inflicting atrocities against Tamils with the support of the Singhalese army, should also be investigated.

It would have been very helpful if this matter was brought at the last Geneva conference

  7. Well said! it is true and correct.

  8. You chaps are all jokers. Where were you all these days. You did not utter one word for the past 4 years about your own people. You lot joined hands with the government for perks and benefits. When your mosques are damaged by the Sinhala racisits elements you all kept your mouth shut. Now you want investigation about your people. Are you really working for your own people or working for the government to turn the attention. I am not telling LTTE chased you lot from North was correct. But the way you kept your mouth all these days make me wonder what you are up to. Think about your people before your own family. Otherwise don’t enter politics.

the government has to control the funding of radical muslims in sri-lanka
there has to be a mechanism in place to record the foreign funders of mosques , muslim organisations and non profit organisations

SLMC a partner to the Government is side-tracting the main issue faced by the Muslims today.

    Dear Mr Hasan
we agree that Muslims had difficulty during the war. But they are the most benefited community during the war and after, because they did all the business in between Tamils and Sinhalese. They have been only evicted from Jaffna, not been killed. Both government and army always kept them happy, gave all what they wanted to keep the Muslims in their side. Muslims economically thrived during the war. And now little light at the end of the tunnel and you want all that to you sir.

The murder of 20,000 Muslims as stated, by the LTTE terrorists were kept under wraps and the thousands then ethnically cleansed in 1990 are still awaitng final resettlement in their lands and homes from which they were evicted. Yet the TNA has started to talk yet again about the Tamil-speaking people who they wish to represent. Will the Muslims bite ?

  13. Sylvia Haik

The SLMC has a point, but they cannot be treated as a special case. There has to be a probe on all the ethnic cleansing atrocities on religious and racial grounds.

  14. Iqbal

Muslims were treated unfairly by LTTE and BBS. Muslims must identify their genuine problems and try to find solutions rather than waiting until TNA tries to find remedies to the war affected communities and intervene at some point.

What about the killing of hundred thousands of tamils by muslim home guards in eastern province. Also MR.HASAN ALI,you are telling that SLMC is working with the goverment to address muslim issues but after the SLMC and UPFA took over eastern province council what they did to the tamil area, nothing. One day the sinhalese will realise that muslims are the cut throats and culprits. What the BODU BALA SENA is doing is correct.

Where were these guys(SLMC) all this while?. While the Tamils were busy after the war ended with turning on the heat on various issues, maybe they(SLMC) were busy with holding on to their portfolios & perks.
