Remains Of Lion Air Victims Displayed

By Camelia Nathaniel

The remains of over 20 victims killed in the Lion Air flight, which was believed to have been shot down on 29th September 1998, were displayed in Jaffna this weekend (11th and 12th Jan) for relatives to identify them.

The wreckage of Lion Air Flight 602 was salvaged off Iranaitivu by the Navy last May, 15 years after its disappearance.
“The human bones and 22 items of clothing and other items were displayed at the Jaffna Municipal grounds. The people were invited to come to the grounds to help identify the clothing and other items of the victims. The aircraft was carrying 48 passengers – all Tamils including eight children -when it was shot down, while the seven member crew included one Sinhalese air hostess and three foreign pilots.

It is ironic that the LTTE that claims to be the liberators of the Tamil people would commit such atrocities to their own kind,” Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said. Rohana said the flight took off from the Palali Airport and within 20 minutes, it went missing. “For a period of 12 years no one knew what had happened to the aircraft and it remained a mystery. In 2012 an LTTE cadre who had left the country had returned and on information received by the Terrorist Investigation department (TID) he was arrested, and later he confessed that he was the person who fired a missile at the aircraft from Iranathivu Island on the orders of Poththu Amman.

The suspect had also identified the area where the aircraft had been shot down, and on his information the Navy was able to locate the aircraft,” he said. According to the police spokesman the navy recovered parts of the aircraft and also some remains of skeletal and items of clothing believed to belong to the victims of the ill fated air craft last year.
He said that the JMO and scientists examined the skeletal remains and scientifically cleaned them up.
