  • Forged letter supplied to a Gibraltar based bank

By Faraz Shauketaly

Harry Jayawardena

Businessman Harry Jayawardena has been named by the Sri Lanka Police’s Commercial Fraud Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a complaint that a forged document was supplied to the Gibraltar based bank ‘S G Hambros’.

The businessman, who has been in the news on a variety of subjects, is accused by the complainant of having forged a letter purporting it to have been issued by the Company Secretaries. The Company Secretaries have denied ever issuing the letter and have confirmed this to the bank in question – and to the Police too.

Although the B Report was filed on 22nd November 2013 the Police questioned Harry Jayawardena as late as the first week in January 2014. Mr Jayawardena’s answers were then put to the complainants who firmly stood by their original complaint as being bona fide. The Police are now expected to go ahead and file charges against Harry Jayawardena.

The existence of the forged document came to light when Harry Jayawardena’s partners Raj Obeyesekere and Zaki Alif received a routine fax from their company bankers in Gibraltar asking for their account to be put in to credit.

Their company, Milford Exports Ceylon Limited was confirmed as being the beneficial owner of five Gibraltar companies that were created and managed by Hambros Bank Nominee services under trust arrangements for Milford Exports.

The economic refugee journalist is one type of canny businessman who just copies and pastes and edits filth.

Vatti Amma, helped make many of her upstart women in the UK millionaires so now its payback time via CT.

Harry does not smoke, drink, womanise and he never needed politics because he was related to both.

      Anyway, Tarzie respected him too.

Lima, do you or others know how Harry J became a billionaire overnight or so soon. Do not blame others when credibility of so called “king or queen makers” are questioned.

      • Greeko

        Game bando the villager,
Harry was Tea manager where Vittachi was CEO (Conselexpo) and I met harry as kid in the 70 ,s
He is not the `not pot` but like Ambanis father the Bombay porter(70′s) he bought shares so he became rich.

  3. Leo Menezes

Does not make sense. Raj Obeyesekere is Harry J’s right hand man. Also. the CID will not wait for weeks and weeks without questioning a suspect in such a serious case as this. This story is rather fishy.

Those who consume poison are eventually consumed by the same poison. By now every one should know that those who touch the US torch not just get get burned but burned out..

  5. Bandara

Those who have achieved prominence and filthy rich status in Sri Lanka through deceits and corruption should not touch the US torch or attempt to hide behind the principled good governance of the USA.

while someone climbing on a ladder to touch the Everest the rest will be awaiting to see his falling then the victory. This is an extraordinary fact of this country.

    • bil

climbing up to Everest does not mean one has to deprive others of their share of profit and income. neither is there a need to steal from the treasury – which is what happens when income is undeclared and stashed away in safe havens like Gibraltar.

harry j is a good businessman but he has ignored the rules of the state. his influence is far reaching and wide. he has former that is retired Police officers within his employ who know how to rein in those who are against him. Once again we are reminded of Lasantha wickramatunga;s undertaking to the public that the Sunday Leader is there for all and that we should not take this for granted. Unbowed and Unafraid this week the Sunday Leader is what we expect it to do: report on the various issues that is costing this country money. Imagine how much of taxes may have been undeclared – surely they did not declare the RS 26 billion now lying in Gibraltar? Why is the inland revenue not doing anything about this? why is the exchange control silent? if a normal man got caught smuggling over USD 10,000 at the airport, there would be serius charges but HArry and his partners are getting away? One justice system for one set, another for the rest. Sri Lanka the real wonder of Asia. But Sunday LEader well done, Asanga Senevirathna has shown that the LEader can still do the business. Well done I have got full value for RS 60. (Harry’s one share more is worth only RS 10 no?)

    You Blardy Fools!

HJ has always played both sets of politicians. He gives to the UNP and has given the Rajapakses and their sycophants bag loads of black money. How do you think he survived after SL Insurance was taken over? Most who comment here do not know the facts but think they have good imagination.
The damned CID is not interested because they are frauds. But the Gibralter bank wants to teach HJ and others a lesson. After the right people get their cut, the matter will go under the carpet! Want to bet?

    • bil

yes I want to bet – before harry j goes to his maker raj and zaki and Sonia will get what is rightfully theirs! I do bet.

  9. Bandara

Some guys are praising HJ not knowing how he got to this position. Those who live in glass houses should not (even think) of throwing stones art others.

  10. nt

there is a difference in sri Lankan law between legal ownership (SG Hambros) and beneficial ownership (Mileford Exports) you will find that sri Lankan law recognizes only the legal owner. the author has not looked into this aspect and I welcome an article based around this most significant issue. otherwise a great article, factual and highlights the sunday leader at its best. it is almost a pleasure to read such articles and this journo must be made of steel to write about very easily one of the most influential sri lankans around!

  11. Greeko

“original complaint as being bona fide. ”

Bona fide means estimated or assumed but never actual.

Parents learnt Greek Latin and English so it kept us in good steed.

Now its all moda wanse’s commenting as if Harry the first class tea taster is a thief of counterfeit which is a criminal offence and jail able.
