Polls Chief Gets Tough On Demo

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has ordered legal action to be taken against a group of people who staged a protest in Weligama yesterday.

The protest was staged by employees of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha against the police, after the police seized a truck belonging to the local council on the basis it was used for election work by a candidate in the area.

The Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha employees blocked the Galle – Matara road yesterday using trucks in protest after the police seized the truck on Friday evening.

The Pradeshiya Sabha employees said they needed the truck back to carry out their day to day duties.

However Elections Commissioner, who was informed about the incident, ordered legal action to be taken against the protesting employees for hampering election duties by staging the protest.
