Rapporteur To Submit Report To Government

By Easwaran Rutnam

The Special UN Rapporteur on Migrants François Crépeau is to submit a report to the Government at the end of his visit to Sri Lanka next month, a spokesperson for Crépeau said.

He is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from 19 to 26 May during which he will look into issues related to migrants in Sri Lanka.
However the exact schedule of Crépeau’s visit was not immediately made available to The Sunday Leader as according to his spokesperson, under the code of conduct for UN special Rapporteurs they cannot speak to the media until the end of their country visits.

Last December the Special Rapporteur of the UN on Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons, Dr. Chaloka Beyani visited Sri Lanka.

Dr. Beyani looked at the post conflict resettlement of internally displaced persons, their livelihood restoration and infrastructure development undertaken by the government of Sri Lanka after the conflict. At the end of his visit Dr. Beyani had said that his report on the visit to Sri Lanka will be presented to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2014 and before that a draft of the report will be presented to the Government for comments.
