Power Grid Boosted By 55%

By Faraz Shauketaly

The national power grid presently receiving 40% of its input from the Norochcholai coal power plant is set to receive a further boost of 300 MW of power, raising its total output to 55% by the end of July.

Secretary to the Ministry, M.M.C. Ferdinando told The Sunday Leader that Engines 1 and 2 were both performing as planned and producing 600 MW of power – an all time high of 40% of the national grid.

Ferdinando confirmed that the additional 300 MW was coming on line when Engine 3 would add its production to the national grid.

The effect on the finances of the Ceylon Electricity Board with this level of far cheaper power was clear, said Ferdinando. “Coal has a per unit cost including loan repayments of Rs 9.41 whilst oil-based power has an average of between Rs 25 and Rs 35 per unit; this highlights the importance of our Coal power plant,” he added.

Some analysts pointed out that in essence the Coal Plant had paid for itself. The Chairman of the CEB W.B. Ganegala meanwhile highlighted the fact that the reliance on hydro power had reduced in recent months due to the poor rainfall figures – and the need to release available water to the key areas of drinking water and agriculture.

The CEB in conjunction with the Mahaweli Authority and the Agriculture Departments and the Ministry of Power and Energy have regular meetings in which all requirements are balanced with needs but where priority is always given to drinking water and agriculture.

However with forecasts looking good for the next few months, the dependency on hydro power is set to rise from the current figure of approximately 12%. Ganegala meanwhile maintained that the recent shutdown of the plant was a scheduled routine one carried out when demand was low.
