The Sunday Leader

Media Group Concerned

The international media rights group, Reporters Without Borders raised concerns over what it claims was a media censorship on coverage of the incidents which occurred in Aluthgama on Sunday and the assault and threats faced by some journalists who went to cover the incidents.

RSF says journalists were harassed and attacked and their equipment were smashed when they went to cover the clashes, in which dozens of people were injured and several were killed.

Those that came under attack included Upul, the driver of a van of The Sunday  Leader, while Binoy Suriarachi, a journalist attached to the newspaper was held hostage of several hours. Suriarachi and two other journalists, Megara Tegal from The Sunday Leader and Irudina journalist Dileesha Abeysundara, had gone to Aluthgama last week to report on the violence which took place in the area.

Suriarachi was held hostage by a gang while he was on the street and his release was negotiated by Irudina journalist Dileesha Abeysundara.

“Censorship of the media’s news coverage by the authorities is outrageous but customary in Sri Lanka whenever problems with minorities arise,” said Benjamin Ismaïl, head of the Reporters Without Borders Asia-Pacific desk.

“However, banning coverage of events will not prevent the information from getting out,” he said.

A police complaint was lodged over the incident.

Media reports differ from one group to another. Some reporters said two people killed and some say four were killed. This shows the veracity of reporting. Also, media failed to report who instigated the riots by attacking a BUDDHIST MONK by some Muslim men and put the blame on BBS and white washing the Muslims in the area. Is this what you call press freedom?.
