TNA To Raise Valikamam Land Issue

By Waruni Karunarathne

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is to write to President Mahinda Rajapaksa regarding the Valikamam North land issue.

TNA MP Mavai Senathirajah told The Sunday Leader that an attempt was made by the military recently to grab the land released for resettlement in Valikamam North.

He added that a protest was carried out by people of the area and some members of the TNA to stop the land survey which was a measure towards grabbing the land.

“In 2003, we filed a fundamental rights case and in 2006, the Supreme Court passed a ruling to release the land in the J226 Grama Sevaka Division for resettlement,” he said.

He added that despite the fact that some areas were released, the military has been occupying over 6000 acres of land in the area and now attempts are being made to acquire the released land.

He added that regardless of the Supreme Court ruling, the Land Commissioner in Colombo has issued an acquisition notice following which the Survey Department tried to carry out a land survey to acquire land in Valikamam North. However, the survey was put on hold by the protest carried out by the people and the members of the TNA.

Senadhirajaj accused the military of grabbing the land belongs to the people and requested the government to take necessary measures immediately to cancel the acquisition notice.  He said that a letter was addressed to President Mahinda Rajapaksa regarding the matter.
