Navy Launches Investigation Into Rape

By Camelia Nathaniel

The navy has launched an investigation into the rape of a young girl in Jaffna.

The identification parade was held last Friday of seven naval personnel arrested for the rape of the 11-year-old Tamil girl in the Kytes area.

The Kyts police, having conducted investigations, had arrested seven naval personnel attached to the Poorikalabhoomi Navy detachment last Friday and produced them before the Jaffna children’s court and remanded them until July 21 pending an identification parade.

The Kytes police are conducting further investigations. Navy spokesman Commander Kosala Warnakulasuriya said that the seven sailors were asked to report for an identification parade, but the complainants had not come to identify them. Hence the suspects were remanded until next date of the hearing.

However he said that those arrested had denied the charges levelled against them. The Navy spokesman said that a special investigation had been launched by the Navy to determine if these suspects had committed the alleged crime and if they are found to be guilty of the crime they will be dealt with legally.

Complainants were under intimidation – else they would have gone.
Even had they gone, there would have been no identification,as the real perpetrater
would not have been produced as part of the parade – this is a common subterfuge – all will be released.
Lawyers are still prevented from being present to advise arrested persons before & during interrogation though this is allowed by the law.
