DWC Resources Misused

By Nirmala Kannangara

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) resources have been used for the election campaign of its Minister’s son, DWC employees allege.

Wildlife Conservation Minister, Vijith Wijayamuni Soyza is accused of violating election regulations by using DWC property for his son Udara Soyza’s election campaign in the Monaragala District, Wildlife Department sources said.

According to the sources, Wildlife Department holiday bungalow in Weheragala has now been converted to Udara Soyza’s party office where meetings are held continuously from the time the Uva Provincial Council was dissolved.

“Misusing of public property for Soyza’s election campaign is at the peak in Monaragala and the employees of Wildlife Department too are working round the clock for the campaign work,” the sources said.

It is also learnt that Minister Soyza has recruited 44 labourers to the Wildlife Department from July 1, to which the existing casual labour force have shown their displeasure.

“Nearly 100 volunteer trackers and casual labourers work in the DWC over the past two years. Without making them permanent Minister recruited 44 labourers to the permanent grade from Monaragala merely for political gain. It is said that it is Udara Soyza that has selected these 44 labourirs and has recommended them to his father- the Minister,” alleged the sources.

The sources further said about the manner two water bowsers have been taken to Monaragala from the Yala National Park to distribute water to the people.

“There is a severe water crisis in the Yala park and these bowsers were sent to supply water for the wild animals. Despite of the serious situation in Yala, Minister Soyza has taken these two bowsers from the Galge entrance in the Yala park and has taken to Moneragala,” the sources added.

Meanwhile it is learnt that Minister Soyza ordered Director General DWC H.D. Ratnayake to release a lorry for Udara Soyza’s election campaign.

“This is how the Minister is misusing public property for his son’s election campaign. This would be worsening in run up to the Uva Provincial Council,” added the sources.

Some one should report to the courts, and voters should not vote Soyza.
