Sabaragamuwa Uni Students Complain to HRC

Students of Sabaragamuwa University have lodged a complaint with the Human Right Commission of Sri Lanka over the arrest of the two Tamil students by the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID).

Rasindu Jayasinghe, the leader of the Students’ Movement of the Sabaragamuwa University told The Sunday Leader that, the students had lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on the 9th of August against the arrest of the two Tamil students.

“We carried out another picket last Wednesday (13) demanding that the authorities release our fellow students,” he added.

According to him, on the 3rd of this month, a third year Tamil student was arrested while he was doing his exam, and another first year student was arrested recently, for allegedly self inflicting injuries. “They are being accused of trying to create disharmony among the university students.

We refute all the allegations levelled against those two students,” Jayasinghe said.

According to the Students’ Movement, the HRCSL had said that the commission will mediate to push the authorities to take necessary steps for the immediate release of the two students.

However, HRCSL Legal Secretary, Nimal Punchihewa, commenting on the issue, said the complaint is being considered by the HRCSL.

“According to the normal procedure, they have to make a written submission of the incident. Thereafter, the HRCSL will consider whether there has been a fundamental rights violation. Then we will call both the parties and examine the case,” he told The Sunday Leader.

Recently, two Tamil students were arrested by the TID and were being questioned for trying to create disharmony among the students.

According to the police, the third year student is being questioned for being allegedly involved in activities directed at spreading hatred and creating tension in the university. According to the police, he was a former LTTE cadre who had been with the LTTE from 2008 to 2009, during the last phase of the war, and the student had undergone rehabilitation.

The first year student is being arrested based on reports on self inflicting injuries with the intention of blaming another group, in order to create disharmony among the university students. (WK)
