TNA To Take Blockade To Court

By Camelia Nathaniel

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) is to go to the Supreme Court to lift the restrictions on foreigners travelling to the Tamil-majority Northern Province.

Mavai Senathirajah, president of the Illangai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), the main constituent of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) which rules the Northern Province, said that his party is consulting legal experts on taking the matter to the Supreme Court.

“It is a violation of a Fundamental Right, because thousands of Lankan Tamils living abroad as citizens of other countries will be put to great inconvenience if they want to go to their ancestral places in the Northern Province. Thousands come home to the North to visit their relations, participate in weddings and funerals and to attend to their properties. Many come to help war affected people. These Lankans, will now have to get two visas: one to enter the country, and another to go to their ancestral homes in the North. This is totally unacceptable,” Senathirajah said.

As per the new rules announced by the Military Spokesman on October 15, foreign passport holders including Colombo-based foreign correspondents and members of the Lankan Tamil Diaspora will have to get the written permission from the Secretary, Ministry of Defense, to travel to the North. The spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya said that the step had been taken to foil “negative interventions” with implications for national security and social harmony. No details were revealed giving rise to speculation about the exact reasons.

Meanwhile the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) leader V. Anandasangaree described the ban as a thoughtless action and warned that it would only give a boost to extremists among the Tamils and encourage the pro-LTTE section among the Tamils in Sri Lanka and overseas. “I will write to the President about this,” he said.

    Mr. Senathirajah,

I wish to remind you that we had to take permission from LTTE those days whenever we Sri Lankan citizens wanted to visit, places of worship, relatives in the northern province.

  2. Manuelpillai

Two visas are not necessary for those who want to visit this country. On the one hand the Government is saying that they treat all alike, but they allow the Army to give Orders contrary to humanitarian principles.

Never ever trust Tamil people. Last 65 years these Sri Lanka Tamils robbed the wealth of the Sinhalese nation, Sri Lanka. Last 35 years all the Tamil Colombo Companies heavily funded to LTTE, to destroy Economy of Sinhalese Nation, Sri Lanka. Because of these LTTE destroyed Central Bank, Airports, Air Crafts and Oil Tanks also. Sri Lanka army knows who are the LTTE and they knows how they secretly entering to North Province to give bad name for Sinhalese Nation. They did last 35 years to International community giving bad name for Sri Lanka.

Never ever trust these people, Indian Proverb, “If you see TAMIL and Cobra, kill TAMIL first” and Sri Lanka old generation Proverb “never ever trust TAMIL who front of the mirror, tamil who dead and tamil who going to born”

The Tamil Diaspora created this situation for the Govt to be vigilant who had been sending people to manufacture videos to tarnish the image of the govt by providing them to the western print & electronic media.

  6. My advice to Mavai is please donot waste your time to take this matter to Courts. Who is the Chief Justice today. He is nobody other than Mahinda Mama’s good buddy. If Mahinda Mama say throw this case out he will be obliged to that request. After all today the entire justice system is controlled by Mahinda Mama. Mahinda Mama is taking revenge against Tamils from North. Mahinda Mama knew very well that 99% of those who visit Jaffna are Tamlls holding foreign passport. He wants to show his power.

“Lankan Tamils living abroad as citizens of other countries” These fools, modayas dont understand a simple thing like this. They are foreigners so if they want to go north they have to take permission from our forces.

  8. gamarala

This amounts to negation of fundamental rights of only one section of tourists, merely on ethnic grounds.
Why this paranoia – tamils abroad in daily communication with northern citizens know what happens in the NP daily – apart from reports on the web.
Any citizen demanding equal rights is deemed a ‘terrorist’.
Recent attempt at ‘resurrection’ of LTTE in the north was a futile drama by the army – three tamils were sacrificed.

    Mr Anandasangari,
You are either a hypocrite or doesn’t have the knowledge as to what is going on in the South. It is a majority minority issue based on racially motivated agenda. As you are aware that there is no threat to Sri Lanka by the defunct LTTE. There are few Diaspora who raise the LTTE flag and slogans. But in order to subjugate the Tamils , the Sri Lankan government is bent on putting harsh regulations on the Diaspora. It is suggested that the Diaspora imposes sanctions against Sri Lanka by boycotting Sri Lankan Goods and Air travel. Also to persuade other countries to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka. Grabbing of lands, imposition of unwanted regulations on the Diaspora tantamounts to crime against humanity. The Sri Lankan government is forcing the tamil minority to demand separation. It seems to be the only solution to the conflict.

  10. Lanka

Mavai Senathirajah, president of the Illangai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK),should be aware that the majority of the thousands of Lankan Tamils living abroad as citizens of other countries are asylum seekers, who got their foreign passports by disgracing and denouncing the good name of mother Lanka. They feared for their lives if they were returned. Sri Lankans do not need these traitors who sold their birthright. These Tamil foreigners must be sent back immediately.

  11. This is a bad decision by the Defence Department. Preventing foreigners travelling North is not a good image. Today these foreigners are the ones who brought foreign exchange to our country. We need foreign currencies. Check each and every airline coming to Colombo. You will there are hundreds of Srilankan born foreigners are in the flight. If you prevent these people coming to North all your flights will be half full. Please don’t treat Tamils are the enemies of this country. After all they left the island due to various reasons. I hope Defence Department will have a serious look at this decision.

Hey Mr. Senadhiraja, why do these Tamil diaspora people need to come here when they keep complaining to their white masters (and you keep repeating same) that they are being abducted, tortured etc..etc..?? What a bunch of ungrateful people we are living with!!!

  13. LTTE says “only give a boost to extremists among the Tamils and encourage the pro-LTTE section” So why LTTE worried about it.

  14. Bun

This should have been done right from the beginning just after the end of the war by the government of Sri Lanka to prevent subversive elements entering these areas to resurrect the dead LTTE and to damage the image of Sri Lanka in the West.
I would like to ask Mavai Senathirajah, president of the Illangai Thamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK),the reason why he forget to raise the issue of “violation of a Fundamental Right”, when Tamil Tiger Terrorists were in control of these areas, when Mavai Senathirajah was a part of the Terrorists group, when these Lankans, then had to get two visas : one to enter the country, and another to go to their ancestral homes in the North from Tamil Tiger Terrorists plus a ransom to Tamil Tiger Terrorists.

Why was that not totally unacceptable to Senathirajah then? Did thousands of Lankan Tamils living abroad as citizens of other countries were not put to great inconvenience when they wanted to go to their ancestral places in the Northern Province then? Did thousands not come home to the North to visit their relations, participate in weddings and funerals and to attend to their properties then? If not why?

    Mavai Senathirajah we need answers.

With Army cantons in 25 Districts and 50 Vehicles given to the BBS with Army
drivers in Civil, one has to imagine the background to an Army Officer banning
visits to certain Districts, with no grounds for doing so. It is I suppose only be
possible to do so in using the Laws of the Country.

This further proves that the NP is Army occupied. Further this was tit for tat
in that the NPC did not participate in the Presidential visit to the North? Such
are the cheap political attitude of the Regime. The IC will take note of this and
    issue restrictions to its tourists.
