TULF Warns EU Court Ruling Will Help LTTE

By Camelia Nathaniel

The European Union Court’s annulment of the EU ban on the LTTE will help revive the separatist and terrorist outfit in the north, warned V. Anandasangaree, president of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF). “Pro-LTTE groups both within the island and overseas have received a shot in the arm, and will now openly propagate the LTTE’s cause of separatism and terrorism. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) will now up its stake reflecting the LTTE’s demands,” the veteran Tamil leader said.

Anandasangaree said that the LTTE is still active in the North and is very influential, adding that it is the LTTE which defeated him in the Northern Provincial Elections held in 2013. “It had swayed the people against me. People were threatened that action would be taken if they voted for me,” he alleged. Describing the EU court’s decision as being, “very irresponsible” Anandasangaree said that those who were lenient towards the LTTE should visit Jaffna and see for themselves the havoc wrought by the LTTE’s armed struggle.

S.Thavarajah of the Eelam Peoples’ Democratic Party (EPDP) and leader of the opposition in the Northern Provincial Council said that the judgment had not said that the LTTE is not a terrorist group but had only said that the banning procedure had not conformed to EU norms. “The court had only pointed out that the ban had not been based on an EU investigation and had gone by Indian inputs and material from the press and the internet,” Thavarajah said.

Meanwhile Mavai Senathirajah, president of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), the main component of the TNA, said that the EU’s court’s decision had been taken on the basis of EU laws and therefore he had no comment to make on it.
