A few years ago, the word ‘blogger’ would sound alien to most people, but in today’s world where social media reigns, bloggers are everywhere. They are the new face of media and publicity, reaching a wider audience than magazines or any other form of print publication do. Just browsing through sites like WordPress or social media sites like Instagram, you will come across countless blogs dedicated to various topics, from food and fashion to music and art.

However, very few bloggers manage to expand their blogs in the way that Tala Samman has. She has now become a household name in the United Arab Emirates and in fashion blogger circles around the world through her blog, myfashdiary.

The blog had humble beginnings in 2009 when she started it as an online fashion diary, a fun way to share her fashion with her friends. Fast forward five years later; her blog has now become the go-to-style blog in the UAE. Tala was surprised by the blogs rapid growth in popularity, “I didn’t expect it to turn into my full time job and a fully fledged blog.” Tala now blogs not just on fashion, but on topics like beauty, food and travel.

Originally from Syria, Tala was born in Chicago, the USA, and grew up in Dubai. She is a graduate of the renowned London College of Fashion, where she studied Fashion Media and Communication.

Ever since its inception, has gone from strength to strength. Her blog won “Best Style Blog” at the Grazia Middle East awards in 2011, and the blog it has been nominated in Ahlan! Magazine’s Best at the Dubai awards, as well as at the Marie Claire, UK Blog, and Twitter awards. Tala was also named one of Dubai’s Hot 100 in 2011. She has collaborated with Net-A-Porter, ASOS, Tom Ford, and Halston. Tala has also hosted and styled for numerous events between Dubai, London, and Doha, and has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, Grazia UK, Grazia Middle East, Harper’s Bazaar Arabia, and Marie Claire Middle East.

Alongside her blog, Tala is also a Huffington Post contributor and has interviewed the likes of Michael Kors, Carolina Herrera, and Nicole Richie. She is also a contributing editor, stylist, and consultant and was a former Fashion Editor at a Middle Eastern Condé Nast’s title. She was also named Fashion Personality of the year” at the Grazia Middle East awards 2012, and was a Visionarie nominee at the Emirates Woman of the year awards in 2013.
Describing what one day in her life is like, she says no one day is ever the same, “Which is why I probably love it! I could be in a meeting one hour, trying out a new workout, the next, chasing invoices one time and sitting for 10 hours of research another.”

The life of a fashion blogger comes with many perks, and she says that one of the highlights of her career so far is that she gets to work with brands that she grew up loving and admiring. For instance, in 2011 she was appointed as the brand ambassador for Sephora in the Middle East!
Her blog is known for being up to date with the latest trends and whats hot and whats not in the world of fashion, so who better to ask for fashion advice?! Tala says for this season, the trends to look out for are minimal whites, metallic golds and knits.

Trends come and go, but every fashionista has her wardrobe essentials that remain even as the trends change. This is something Tala firmly believes in, as her motto, which can be found on the blog, is “Fashion is what others declare is in. Style is what you declare is in.” Tala’s staples has some that she keeps in her cupboard all year round are, “A white shirt and a leather biker jacket (which looks better with age),” she says.

As a brand ambassador for big beauty companies like Sephora, Tala knows her beauty as well as her fashion. Tala says that her beauty essentials are a Dermalogica cleanser, Dior glow primer, Guerlain bronzer and a Tom Ford nude lipstick
Tala loves to travel and her most recent trip was to Sri Lanka, talking about her trip she says, “It was great, everyone was so lovely and everything was so beautiful. The highlight would definitely have to be Saman Villas in Bentota, it was literally heaven on earth.”

When asked if she has any advice for anyone looking to start their own fashion blog, she says, “Think of how you could be different from the millions of fashion blogs out there… find a reason why someone is going to take time out of their busy days to check out your site.”

As for her future plans she says, “Stay tuned! I’m working on an exciting beauty collaboration!”
