Death Toll Reaches 17

The death toll from the severe weather reached 17 yesterday with 15 injured and 12 people still missing, the Disaster Management Center (DMC) said.DMC spokesman Sarath Lal Kumara said that over 900,000 people have been affected by the poor weather in several districts.

He said that over 17,200 houses were either fully or partially damaged as a result of the heavy rain, floods and landslides over the past few days.

Meanwhile the death toll from the landslide in Rilpola, Badulla had reached nine by Friday night, Sarath Lal Kumara said. Several houses were buried after the landslide.

The Department of Meteorology, meanwhile, said that the low pressure area has intensified into a depression again and was located about 400 km east to Hambantota yesterday. It was expected to move northwards affecting the weather over Sri Lanka and the surrounding sea area. (ER)
