STF Rushed To Beruwala

By Easwaran Rutnam

The police Special Task Force (STF) was deployed to Beruwala yesterday following a clash on Friday night involving the opposition and Government supporters.
The clash had taken place after an opposition rally held in Beruwala in support of common opposition Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that the clash took place when those who attended the rally had met at the house of an opposition politician in the area.

The opposition claimed that Government supporters arrived at the location and attacked the vehicles of opposition members, including that of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who were at the house. The Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE), a local election monitoring group, said that the attack had taken place when Kumaratunga and Provincial Council Member Hirunika Premachandra had gone to the house for dinner after the rally.

According to CaFFE at least four vehicles were damaged in the incident while part of the house of the opposition politician in the area was also damaged.

CaFFE quoted Ms. Premachandra as saying a mob had surrounded the house when she and Chandrika Kumaratunga were inside and then attacked the house with stones. SSP Ajith Rohana said that an ensuing clash had left three people injured.

He said that the STF was sent to the area to ensure further clashes did not occur. He also said that a special police investigation has been launched into the incident.

Meanwhile CaFFE said that cinemas in the country are showing propaganda videos of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. CaFFE said that the video is shown during the break of the movie at the cinema.

CaFFE noted that the propaganda video has been produced by the Government Information Department violating election laws.

What would happen to this country, if he grab the third term?

  2. George

The EC is a spineless ‘ponnaya’ who is dancing to the Govt tune and promising to ‘Investigate’ but not doing any damn thing.

  3. Deploying STF personnel after the incidence is not the correct thing. What the hell the Police were doing? Did they try to prevent the disturbance. What I understand from few friends the Police was watching the whole incidence and did nothing to stop. This is where the law and order comes into operation. All the people who involved in the attack are from the ruling party. Are they above the law. I find it very difficult to understand why there is one rule for ordinary people and one rule for the ruling party people.
