BASL Cries Foul

By Camelia Nathaniel

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) alleged that Chief Justice Mohan Peiris is attempting to get the support of some of the lawyers by way of obtaining their signatures in a bid to cling to his position. President of the Bar Association Upul Jayasuriya said that the Chief Justice had not realized that no lawyer will go against the Bar Association in order to support him.

“The chief justice was taking part in a political discussion in the middle of the night with politicians and a candidate of the election to impose curfew and emergency when in fact those instances could be challenged before him. So no lawyer will condone that conduct which is appalling and shocking. No lawyer would want the temple of justice to be desecrated,” he said.

Jayasuriya went on to say that the lawyer, who appeared as a spokesman for the Chief Justice last week and denied reports that the Chief Justice was to resign, was from the Ratnapura Bar.

What is wrong in Mohan Peiris is meeting Mahinda Rajapakshe? They are personal friends and Mohan went ask about Mahinda’s wellbeing.
It is difficult to prove the coup allegation.

  2. The Chief Justice Mohan Peiris was duly appointed by The then President Mahinda Rajapaksha. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) should not try to force him out through intimidation. This is not Ethically right. Today even the educated man in the country has gentlemen qualities.

  3. Mohan Peiris is the only CJ who accepted the appointment while there were cases pending against him. He is a shameless . He should be sent to 10yrs rigourous imprisonment for the damage he did- the bloody crrok
