Crackdown On Drugs

By Waruni Karunarathne

A special police unit is to be established under Western Province DIG Poojith Jayasundara to crack down on the drug dealers, drug centres, distributors and smugglers.

Minister of Public Order, Disaster Management and Christian Affairs, John Amaratunga said that the special police unit will monitor all points of entry to the country including points manned by Customs officers and at sea.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader Minister Amaratunga said that the situation of drugs is extremely serious in the country. He added that according to some findings Sri Lanka is identified as an ‘international drug centre’.

“We are very worried about the situation. Once it was revealed in parliament that Sri Lanka is now an international drug centre where drugs are brought into the country and distributed to different parts of the world,” he added.

He also said that the government may seek INTERPOL to investigate the international connections of drug kingpin Wele Suda. The Minister also said that his Ministry will ensure the security of Wele Suda as there could be a plot to kill him, especially since he has important information in relation to drug dealings taking place in the country as well as outside.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said the police have launched a special investigation with the Central Bank to trace Wele Suda’s international bank transactions. He added that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka is investigating his financial dealings internationally and locally and is also looking into the account transactions of UPFA MP Duminda Silva.

The only way is to impose death penalty as JRJ imposed amnd like Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.
As a Sri Lankan businessman now living abroad, was a large scale importer and I am well aware of the Customs bribery.
There must be a drug related propaganda to the general public.
