Honorary Positions Under The Scanner

The National Executive Council is to review the professorships and other honorary positions granted to various persons by Nongovernment Organisations (NGOs) over the past few years.

The committee has agreed to forward these allegations to the recently appointed Center for investigating Bribery and Corruption and to the Inspector General of Police. Those who received these honorary positions have even been granted stickers to paste on their vehicles. The individuals have used their positions and stickers to engage in numerous illegal activities, it is alleged. The NGOs and civil organisations have granted these honorary positions for a fee ranging from Rs. 50,000 to 500,00, it is alleged.

Excluding the honorary positions given by the government, these organisations have granted over 1000 ranks, the National Executive Council was informed. The allegations will be presented to the relevant legal authorities and appropriate legal actions will be taken against these organisations very soon, sources from National Executive Council said.
