Ex-Envoys Under Probe

The Ministry of External Affairs has appointed two special committees to investigate allegations of corruption and fraud by Sri Lankan Ambassadors and High Commissioners of the former regime.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ajith P. Perera said that the two committees will conduct separate investigations into large and small scale corruption.

Newly appointed Sri Lankan diplomats have also been told to report any information related to corruption in their respective missions.

Perera also said that some Ambassadors appointed by the former government had gone missing and the government will seek the assistance of the international police to arrest them based on the outcome of the investigations.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister said that investigations into the allegation related to the former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia have already commenced.

The Ukraine government has lodged a formal complaint with the Foreign Ministry detailing former ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga’s alleged arms dealings with rebels in Ukraine.

A shaky truce is in force in the conflict in Ukraine’s rebel-held east which has claimed more than 6,000 lives in 11 months.

Kiev and the West accuse Russian President Vladimir Putin of supporting the insurgency with troops, tanks and heavy weapons – accusations he denies.
