NFC Enabled ID Card A First In Sri Lanka

  • Relief for parents, security for the child and convenience to teachers

An innovative and a revolutionary change in the educational sector in Sri Lanka is about to begin. The introduction of an electronic identity card activated by NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, the first of its kind in Sri Lanka, will benefit parents, students and teachers. The card is designed to provide relief to parents, security to the child and convenience to teachers.

This Student Tracking System known as WST, enables parents to know the whereabouts of their children especially when they leave home to attend private tuition classes.

The card stores the name, school, and even a photograph of the child. The system works only if the parent/teacher and the student get registered with the service provider.

This NFC touch card will be used as the student ID card/admission card and this card has to be tapped on to the NFC mobile phone at the class security point. Instantly the student is captured by the NFC phone and a sms will be generated to the parent’s mobile to notify the child’s presence in class.

It will show the ‘in’ time as well as the ’out’ time when the class is over. It will also show details of fees paid, and/or whether any extra classes are to be held or a cancellation of a particular class.

Benefits to teachers and students are also many.  Students can get to know of any extra classes to be held or when a class is cancelled or information as to what lesson will be discussed at the next class.

It also serves as a Teacher’s smart attendance and payment system where they can easily send out messages to the students to convey any changes to the pre-scheduled classes whilst also maintaining the students’ attendance, late attendance, and fees payment status/history of payments, class holidays, extra classes, or even exam results! This facility can also be used by teachers to send out lecture notes or tutorials class-wise, and even birthday wishes.

These facilities are available only if the user is registered with the service provider. Registration is by a simple method. A parent will be charged a very nominal registration fee of Rs 99/= per month, a teacher Rs 499/- a month but there will not be any subscription charge besides the usual taxes that would be applicable.

Apart from the card being used to monitor or receive information regarding class details it can also be used as a Travel Pass where it is an NFC enabled contactless smart card that can be topped up, just like reloads, and used to pay bus fare. The card need not be tapped on to the POS equipment carried by the bus conductor but just holding it close to the machine, about 2-3 inches away, would do. The frequent complaint by commuters of not receiving their balance can be addressed and resolved by this system.

The WST solution is an introduction by of Superb Business Solutions (Pvt) Ltd, and the brainchild of Chaminda Kandamby who currently serves in an IT company whose Managing Director is Mrs Aban Pestonjee who has supported and encouraged this effort together with the other Directors of the Company.
