Amilani Perera Undeniable Beauty Of Fashion

By Sadhana Senanayake

She is part of the new wave of designers who are taking over the fashion scene in Sri Lanka. With her designs Amilani Perera envisions to create fashionable links between fabrics and history with her high-end ready-to-wear self titled brand ‘Amilani Perera’ that she launched at Colombo Fashion Week 2013. Since then she has been retailing at Melaché fashion boutique. She also has a sub-brand, called ‘Once More’ by Amilani Perera, which is an eco-sustainable label that focuses on recycling and reusing materials to create innovative fashion accessory products.

With a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion & Textile Design awarded by LASALLE College of Arts, Singapore (2009), Amilani is currently working as a design consultant for “Hanes” Lingerie brand at Arvind Lifestyle Brands Limited India, she also possesses four and half years of experience in the Sri Lankan apparel industry, having been employed at MAS Holdings, as a lingerie designer, for Amanté lingerie brand. Her designs have also been showcased at the Sri Lanka Design Festival (SLDF) fashion show in 2010, 2011, and 2012 under the MAS Intimates segment. She also emerged as a finalist in the British Council’s Young Creative Entrepreneur Design and Fashion Award in 2012 and in the Sri Lanka Fashion and Apparel Awards 2013 under the “Industry Young Blood” and “Sustainable Fashion” award categories.

Her most recent collection that she showed at CFW 2015, was under the theme “a commoner playing with a king’s cape” inspired by a recent trip to Vietnam trip. She used the legend of the ‘five claw Vietnam dragon’, an impressive motif of the five clawed dragon which was the sign of royalty. Commoners were not allowed to wear pieces with this motif; they were allowed to wear pieces with a three clawed dragon or a four clawed one. The five-clawed dragon was forbidden and exclusive.

“I wanted to produce a collection where the whims and fancies of the common touch meet royal elegance. In this space I believe that undeniable beauty is created.” Amilani Perera SS 15’ showcased what it truly means to make the wearer feel empowered in the unique, custom made pieces that belong to them.

The collection has richly ornamented silken fabrics and batiks, neatly blended with embroidery work, using wonder technique and fog foil printing, thus creating the aura of sophistication, with the right blend of empowerment for the wearer. The collection has a women’s wear line with silhouettes that are in mixture of structure and fluid, with a neutral colour palate of white, blush pink, shades of gold and silver.

Amilani’s next step is to take her fashion label to the international stage.
