New Authority On Drugs

Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne says his ministry plans to install a separate authority to stipulate the prices of drugs. He said that since drugs are being sold at prices about four times the stipulated price, the new authority will ensure prices are not illegally increased.

Malpractices in drug importation will be investigated and the new authority will ensure importers receive 17% profit of the drugs they import and pharmacies get 10% of profit from the same in the future.

Senaratne said that every drug importing company registered with the ministry must submit documents related to what they import. Furthermore, he said a new regulation will be enforced to ensure the quality of imported drugs and storage methods. The minister added that a group of officials from the ministry has already been sent to the Consumer Affairs Authority for training in this regard.

He also said that an investigation is underway on the companies which sell drugs at much higher prices than the original price.
