Farewell, Adiel

REUNION: Dr. Adiel Anghie (centre) with old rugby mates (L-R) Keith Paul, former Royal, CH and Dimbula flanker, Jeyer Rodriguez, former St. Peter’ s and Havelock’s captain and; and (right) Hamzi Hameed, St. Peter’s captain and CR winger, and Upali Obeysekera.

Dr. Adiel Anghie, cricketer and rugby player of St. Peter’s College and University in the late 50s and early 60s, passed away on June 14 in West Virginia, USA – struck down by cancer. He was 73.
He was one of St. Peter’s finest sporting products in the late 50s. He captained the school at cricket and rugby, as well as represented it at tennis and hockey. His forte was cricket, and his prowess as a batsman earned him a place in the Sri Lanka Schools team that toured India in the early 60s. Captained by Yatagama Amaradasa, the team remained undefeated on the tour.
Although his deeds for his school in rugby weren’t as illustrious as his cricketing achievements, under his captaincy St. Peter’s enjoyed a successful season.
Perhaps due to the pressures of studies and examinations, Anghie confined his sporting activities to only rugby during his years at Peradeniya University. A stocky centre three-quarter, he was a part of the famous University team of 1963 that figured in the Clifford Cup A division inter-club tournament, a first in University rugby.
The team had the distinction of holding the powerful CR to a draw. Led by one-time Royal College winger, G Thiruchitampalam, the team included Dr. Tony de Sylva, subsequently CR and Sri Lanka flanker, scrum half U Kaluarachchi, former Royal captain, and Dr Makuloluwa, a second row forward who later was a stalwart of Kandy SC. Anghie partnered Royalist O G Samaratunge as the team’s centres.
Dr. Anghie immigrated to the US in 1971 and after being initially based in New York, he moved to West Virginia, where he was Physician at the Bellaire Medical Clinic and Hospital for over 25 years.
Dr. Anghie is survived by his wife, Christine, and son, Niall and his wife, Tracy, and grandchildren, Brandon, Keegan and Aven.
