Erandhi, Cherantha Adjudged Best Sports Stars

  • 23rd Annual School Colours Ceremony

Table Tennis player Erandhi Warusuvithana of Dharmasoka Vidyalaya, Ambalangoda and swimmer Cherantha de Silva of Ananda College, Colombo were adjudged the best Schools Sportswoman and Sportsman at the recent Sri Lanka Schools Sports Colours Awarding Ceremony for the year 2014.

Piyumi Kapugeekiyana won the Best Girls Emerging Player Award and the Best Boys Emerging Player was won by R. Vidushanka from St. Mary’s, Kegalle. Sprinter Yamani Dulanjali received a special award.

A total of 469 school children from 174 schools received awards for the year 2014 in 31 sports in recognition of their special achievements in their chosen fields.

The Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam was the the Chief Guest and the Guest of Honour was Shivani Hegde, the Managing Directress of Nestle Lanka Plc – the main sponsors of the event for the last 23 years.

Speaking at the Awards ceremony Shivani Hegde, MD of Nestle Lanka PLC, said that as a leading Nutrition, Health and Wellness Company in Sri Lanka, Nestle has been dedicated towards developing local school sports for over two decades. ‘Winners are made, not born,’ she emphasized while going on to say, “The Sports Ministry has emphasized the need that a healthy body is needed for a healthy mind and through sports we can develop a healthy nation.

We are proud that Milo has been a strong partner of the Schools Colours awards from its inception. Today these accolades are unquestionably regarded as the ultimate acknowledgement in school sports in Sri Lanka. Milo is interested in ‘fuelling the winning ‘spirit and even Angelo Mathews has been a winner at the past Milo awards.”

The ceremony was organized for the 23rd time, jointly by the Ministry of Education and Sri Lanka Schools Sports Council and sponsored by Nestle (Lanka) Limited.

Colours and merit awards were awarded for Cricket (30), Table Tennis (12), Football (22), Aquatic sports (40), Judo (8), Gymnastic (10), Tennis (8), Hockey (24), Cycling (4), Throw-ball (4), Boxing (20), Mountaineering (9), Squash (8), Basketball (12), Chess (18), Carrom (12), Volleyball (24), Rugby (25), Taekwondo (7), Netball (46), Softball Cricket (11), Handball (8), Karate (28), Elle (12), Aerobic Gymnastic (6), Badminton (10), Scrabble (1), Weightlifting (8), Athletics (21), Rowing (3) and Baseball (18).

Royal College Colombo had the highest number of students who received awards and the Principal Upali Gunasekera was presented with a special memento on the occasion.

In addition to the above Colours and Merit Awards, Special Awards were presented to the following students as nominated by the Schools Sports Associations, for being the Best Performers (Boys and Girls) and The Best Emerging Players (Boys and Girls).

Himasha Eshan — Athletics – Kalutara Vidyalaya

Cherantha De Silva -Aquatic Sports – Ananda College, Colombo
