Capturing Her Vision: Aamina Nizar

By Sadhana Senanayake

Aamina Nizar is making a name for herself in the competitive industry of photography in Sri Lanka. In an industry mostly dominated by men, Aamina holds her own with her impressive work. I got to work with Aamina during this year’s CFW Resort edition and I saw for myself what a hardworking, warm and fun person she is! Her work speaks for itself, and no matter what her subject is she turns it into a beautiful work of art.

On how she would describe herself she says, “I consider myself a bit of a vagabond and have an assortment of interests. While my full time profession is photography, I also enjoy teaching history, reading and travel. I have a creative family and they are my biggest love, support and inspiration.”

Aamina studied at both Ilma International Girls’ School and Asian International School in Sri Lanka and completed her degree in Mass Media from Sophia College, Mumbai.  She later trained in commercial photography under Indian photographer Ian Pereira and returned to Sri Lanka in 2010. Since then she has been running her own studio and her portfolio includes food, gem and jewellery, interiors, portraits, fashion and weddings.

On what led her get into the field of photography, she says, “I was always interested in art and used to paint. Photography, to me was an extension of my first interest in art. So framing a subject and looking at things aesthetically came naturally to me even when I started taking pictures.  I first got a camera when I was 17 and in school. I continued shooting in college and people thought I should take it up professionally. My father thought it would be a good profession and he was the one who really supported me into taking it up.”

Talking about what she loves most about her job, she says “In my head everything around me is beautiful. Through my photography, I like being able to let other people see how I look at the world, which is this crazy, extraordinary and beautiful place, even at its most flawed.”

Aamina has even gone global having just wrapped up a shoot in Australia for a fashion label. “I pick projects I believe in, and this was one product I was passionate about because it embraced diversity and promoted individualism.” Our cover photograph this week is from that shoot.

For anyone looking to get into the field of photograghy, “Love it as an art form first, and then see how you can bring about that vision technically.” She advises. “Never get complacent, and constantly challenge yourself.”

“Photography is just one way I articulate my ideas.” She says when asked what her plans are for the future, “I might teach, write, design or get into documentary film. I take whatever life throw my way and try not to let one thing define me.”
