Video Evidence Used In HRCSL Probe

by Waruni Karunarathne

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) used video evidence in the investigations over the recent clash between the police and Higher National Diploma of Accountancy (HNDA) students. Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Director Investigation and Inquiry of the HRCSL Sithara Thambiliyagoda said that the HRCSL summoned the HNDA students and the Jathika Balaya, the petitioners of the two cases filed on the same incident, and all the respondents from the police last Thursday.

She said the HRCSL had lengthy discussions with all the parties and recorded statements and the petitioners and the respondents submitted the affidavits along with the required documents.

“Among the documents submitted, there were video and photo evidence. We concluded the inquiry and we will make our recommendations after studying the documents and statements submitted by both the parties. We also need to collect some documents from the Colombo General Hospital and if further documents are required we will call upon the relevant parties,” she added. According to Thambiliyagoda, it will take some time for the HRCL to make their recommendation as they need to study the evidence.

Policemen who assaulted even female students on the head with batons, causing serious injury, can be identified, and should be interdicted and charge sheeted.
One girl seriously injured, & is still in hospital.
Correct use of batons/truncheons – hitting on the back to cause pain but not injury -
    was done earlier.
In no country do police hit on the head causing serious lasting injury.
British unarmed police manage to contain/control protests, marches & damage to property, successfully.
A similar demonstration by HNDA students at Batticaloa, concluded peacefully, as not a single policeman was present.
