AG’s Intervention Sought In Lasantha Murder Probe

By Vimukthi Yapa

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has sought advice from the Attorney General to arrest an alleged mastermind in the murder of the founding editor of The Sunday Leader newspaper, Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Sources from the CID told The Sunday Leader that the Attorney General’s advice has been sought to take into custody a military intelligence operative, who is alleged to have been a mastermind in Wickrematunge’s assassination in Attidiya on Janaury 8, 2009.

The suspect, Kandegedara Piyawansa was earlier in custody over the murder but was released by courts after he made a dock statement about the murder.

The CID has sought the Attorney General’s advice to take Piyawansa into custody based on new evidence uncovered during the fresh probe into Wickrematunge’s murder.

Wickrematunge was stabbed on his neck and head in broad daylight in close proximity to the highly-secured Air Force Base in Ratmalana. Wickrematunge succumbed to his injuries at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital in Kalubowila the same afternoon.

Within hours of Wickrematunge’s assassination, the then President promised a full inquiry pledging to bring the perpetrators to justice. There had been no meaningful investigations; no trace of the vehicles used in the assassination, no call made for information on the murder weapon, whilst efforts were made to give different versions for the cause of death, to deliberately derail any future investigations.

The four police teams that were appointed later to conduct investigations arrested two suspects who were believed to have had a link to the assassination together with Wickrematunge’s mobile phone that went missing after the attack.

Out of the two suspects apprehended, Pitchai Jesudasan ‘died’ while in custody, and the second suspect Kandegedara Piyawansa was bailed out by the police due to insufficient evidence

Where is the evidence? Even a notable villain has to have justice even if Gotabhaya denied it to others.

Now that Lasantha’s brother is given a diplomatic posting in Australia to keep him quiet, this probe will not go anywhere.
