The Sunday Leader

SF Likely To Be Questioned

by Vimukthi Yapa

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka is likely to be questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in the probe into the assassination of the founding editor of The Sunday Leader, Lasantha Wickrematunge.

The CID is in the process of getting military intelligence member, Kandegedara Piyawansa back for interrogation in relation to Wickrematunge’s murder.

Piyawansa was taken into custody following Wickrematunge’s murder on January eighth, 2009 for allegedly purchasing mobile SIM cards on a stolen ID card.

However, Piyawansa was released during the former regime after he threatened to reveal details pertaining to Wickrematunge’s murder.

The Sunday Leader learns that the CID has sought advice from the Attorney General (AG) to get Piyawansa back for interrogations on the murder based on new evidence unraveled by the investigators.

It is in this backdrop that the CID is looking at interrogating Fonseka, who at the time of Wickrematunge’s murder was the commander of the Sri Lanka Army.

The CID has already questioned former Inspector General of Police Jayantha Wickremaratne and several other senior police officers over Wickrematunge’s notebook that had gone missing from the Mount Lavinia Police following the assassination along with pages of the police IB that had contained details about the notebook.

I remember there were witnesses statements at the time that the motor cyclist responsible for the shooting was in fatigues and came from the nearby Army Barrack under the command of the then General Fonseka. Also to be kept in mind that Gen. Fonseka was in good terms with the Rajapakses at that time.
