CID Takes Over Probe On Explosives

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has taken over investigations into the discovery of a suicide jacket and explosives in the North last week, police spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

The suicide jacket and explosives were found at a house in Chavakachcheri in Jaffna last week on information received by the police.

The police said that three parcels found in the house contained 12kg of TNT explosives. The police also found 100 bullets and batteries used to trigger explosives.

The police said that it is believed that the explosives were hidden in the house during the conflict which ended in 2009.

The owner of the house had fled but the police launched an operation and arrested him in Kilinochchi. Later another haul of explosives were recovered from a well in Mannar. A Rocket-Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher was among the items recovered.
