CEB Engineers Clash With PUCSL

by Ifham Nizam

The Ceylon Electricity Board Engineers Union (CEBEU) is preparing to go head on with the power sector regulator, the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL), saying they had already raised objections over the integrity and capability of the regulator.

The Union had informed CEB General Manager M. C. Wickremasekara that they were in support of electricity reforms, including establishing a fair and independent regulator.

“However, if hasty decisions are taken, we would be compelled to  withdraw our support and refuse to cooperate with the regulator until a fair and independent regulator is established and a proper environment to work under such eventuality is established,” a senior engineer said.

“You may have seen how difficult it was to go past bureaucratic red tapes of the regulator even after the CEB, Ministry and even the cabinet is convinced of certain emergency generating measures. The regulator was more interested lately in portraying CEB as the culprit in the media and playing the role of the hero than assisting the utility to overcome the crisis,” the Union told the General Manager.

There no list of engineering staff of the CEB, as it is grossly overstaffed, and most have no work to do daily.
They are paid salaries with perks like vehicles and “allowances” for various activities
.This is why they do not want a probe into the CEB.
