The Sunday Leader

Hassen Ali, Hakeem Clash

A new rift has emerged in the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) with party General Secretary Hassen Ali accusing SLMC leader Rauff Hakeem of taking arbitrary decisions.

Ali told The Sunday Leader that Hakeem made some appointments to the SLMC High Command without consulting others in the party.

He also said that Hakeem had taken a decision to amend the party constitution before obtaining the backing of the party leadership.

Hassen Ali however said that there was no move to create a split in the SLMC nor will he resign from the party.

In March Ali slammed what he said at the time as shabby treatment given to him by the SLMC leadership.

Hasen Ali rebelled against the party complaining of a consistent bid by the party establishment to engineer his exit by stripping him of powers due to him as party General Secretary.

Ali was also conspicuous by his absence at the SLMC’s 19th Grand Convention at Palamunai in Ampara in March in which the chief guest was President Maithripala Sirisena.
