President Turns Down Request To Contest

President Maithripala Sirisena has turned down a request from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to contest for another term in office at the next Presidential election.

SLFP spokesman Dilan Perera told The Sunday Leader that the President was urged to seek re-election when the SLFP met last week with the President.

Sources said that the President had said that he would maintain his earlier decision not to seek re-election in 2020.

President Sirisena took office last year after contesting against former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sirisena contested on the mandate to bring about good governance and push for constitutional reforms, including abolishing the Executive Presidential system.

Hon President, hope President would change your decision of not contesting for the second term.

  2. It is a wise move rather than loosing the elections.

  3. Mahen

This is a tactically wrong decision to confirm so early in the term. Now these utterly corrupt politicians who are beyond any redemption will start pandering to some new joker trying to buy influence ignoring the present incumbent.

Hon President has already stated in public that he is incapable to bring about the promised change of good governance fearing the collapse of government if he take action against corrupt politicians in his camp identified by him. That’s his honesty to declare. He would have resigned like Cameron if not Mahinda gunning for him.
