Move To Remove MR, 6 Others

by Ashanthi Warunasuriya

Attempts are underway in the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) to remove former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and six others. SLFP sources said that at a meeting held last week among senior SLFP members and former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, it was proposed that opposition members of the SLFP who are working against the party should be removed.

The closed door meeting was held at a hotel in Ahungalla and the main purpose of the meeting was to discuss the restructuring of the party. It was proposed at the meeting that SLFP Parliamentarians Mahinda Rajapaksa, Kumara Welgama, Dullas Alahapperuma, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Prasanna Ranatunga, Bandula Gunawardena and Rohitha Abeygunawardena be removed from the party on disciplinary grounds, SLFP sources said.

However some SLFP members at the meeting had objected to taking disciplinary action against the joint opposition SLFP members and instead pushed for unity in the party. Others however noted that public comments being made by the Mahinda faction of the SLFP were hurting the party and its future.

When contacted by The Sunday Leader SLFP General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake said that he could not comment on claims over what was said at the meeting. He however noted that the meeting was mainly to discuss restructuring the party and any decision that was taken will be revealed in time.
