The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has recorded a statement from former DIG Vass Gunawardena over the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge, the founding Editor of The Sunday Leader newspaper.

The CID informed the Mount Lavinia Magistrate last week that statements had been recorded from other suspects over the case.

The Magistrate ordered the phone records of an army intelligence officer who is now in custody over the murder, to be submitted to court.

Meanwhile, tight security will be in place on Tuesday at the Borella Kanatta cemetery, as the remains of the late journalist are exhumed.

The Mount Lavinia Magistrate, on September 8, issued an order to exhume the body of Wickrematunge.

The order was issued following a request put forward by the CID. The court ordered that the body be exhumed on September 27 in the presence of a magistrate. The CID had sought a court order to exhume the body to further investigate his murder. They also sought a court order to record a statement from former DIG Vass Gunawardena over the murder. The Magistrate ordered the Department of Prisons to allow the CID to record the statement from Gunawardena, who is in remand custody. Wickrematunge was killed in January 2009 while he was on his way to his office at Ratmalana.

Did this DIG know that he is disgracing the uniform and trust the country have put on him? Does he know when commit a crime one day it will catch up on him. He must be thick and should be punished and set an example to others unless our judiciary is also useless and ineffective.
