CID Wants To Grill 12 Intelligence Officers

by Ashanthi Warunasuriya

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) wants to record statements from 12 intelligence officers over the murder of the founding Editor of The Sunday Leader Lasantha Wickrematunge.

CID sources told The Sunday Leader that the relevant officials have been informed that the 12 intelligence officers need to be questioned to take the investigations forward.

However CID sources added that so far clearance has not been given to record the statements from the intelligence officers. The move to question 12 intelligence officers comes as the Army intelligence officer arrested over the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge was granted bail last week.

Army Intelligence Officer Premananda Udalagama was released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and three sureties of Rs. 500,000 each.

Udalagama was however put back in remand as no one came forward to post the surety bond.

Recently two other intelligence officers arrested over the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda, were also released on bail.

President Maithripla Sirisena had recently said that bail should be made available for the army intelligence officers arrested in connection to the two cases. The statement drew fears that there was an attempt to suppress the ongoing investigations but the government insisted that there was no such attempt.

Lasantha Wickrematunge was killed while he was on his way to office in January 2009 and a fresh investigation was launched recently with his remains being exhumed.

We have lost a great journalist which cannot be replaced. We need justice for Lasantha. All Sri Lankans wants justice for Lasantha’s murder regardless of their ethnicity or religion or language because he is honest to everyone. His honesty was a bitter sweet to the former regime. Many suspect intelligent unit was under the command of Gothabaya Rajapaksa.

Hmmm … reverse gear after supposed 2 hour meeting with Gota … did Gota remind the boss that he could spill a few beans ….???

Can a journalist as him a very pointed question very directly so that he cannot beat around the bush:
      1. Were you present any anytime where the idea to get rid of Lasantha was discussed?
      2. Did Gota remind you that you were privy to any discussions or deliberation to eliminate Lasantha?
