Ceylinco Life opens New Green Branch In Horana

Ceylinco Life has formally declared open itsnew branch building in Horana, purpose-built to the new eco-friendly model developed by the companyfor branches constructed on company-owned land.

The new two-storeybuilding of 5,870 square feet occupies a prime location on the Horana – Panadura Road. It has provision to expand to four storeys, is designed for optimal use of natural light and is entirely solar powered. The building is also equipped with the latest energy efficient lighting and air conditioning systems and has a facility for rainwater harvesting.

Ceylinco Life recently opened a similarly designed larger branch building in Panadura as part of the company’s steadily-progressing plan to convert as many branches as possible to sustainable energy.

Among Ceylinco Life’s branch buildings designed to the new environment-friendly model are those at Wennappuwa, Trincolmalee, Bandarawela, Panadura and Horana.The company also owns the buildings housing its offices in Anuradhapura, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Kandy, Kalutara, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Galle, Matara, Tissamaharama, Negombo, Ratnapura, Kotahena and Mount Lavinia, and some of them have been converted to solar energy.

Ceylinco Life’s head office building at Havelock Road, Colombo 5 has also broken new ground in the sphere of eco-friendly operations with the installation of the biggest solar electricity system in the city of Colombo to date, with an investment of Rs 13.7 million to generate 63.18kW.

Felicitates High Flyers Of G.C.E (A/L), G.C.E (O/L) And Grade Five Scholarship Examination

Colombo: 15th November 2016: Sri Lanka Insurance scholarship scheme awards ceremony was held today at the Nelum Pokuna Theatre. Over 300 scholarships were awarded to achievers from 25 districts who applied for the Suba Pathum scholarship. The unique scholarship scheme was launched in 2013 June in an effort to nurture an academically sound generation. This is the third batch of students who were awarded scholarships under the scheme. A total of 307 students hailing from all corners of the country received financial scholarships today.

There were over 1,000 participants at the event with students, their parents and school principals.

The top four students from each district who excelled at the grade five scholarship scheme received Rs. 20,000 as a lump sum while the top four district level ranking students of the G.C.E (O/L) received a lump sum of Rs. 40,000 each. The top 100 students who excelled at national level at the G.C.E (A/L) examination comprising 25 top ranking students each from the streams Bioscience, Mathematics, Commerce and Arts received a lump sum of Rs. 50,000 each. If the student’s parents or guardian is a Sri Lanka Insurance Life Policy Holder, the benefit will be offered for a continuous period as an annual payment until the child faces the next national level examination. Eligible students should apply for the Sri Lanka Insurance Suba Pathum scholarship scheme to receive the scholarship.

The Suba Pathum scheme has benefited over 300 students each year from the time it was launched by SLIC in 2013; this is the third time the awards ceremony was held. The scheme is one of the most beneficial of such schemes in the industry, with the total value of the scholarships presented annually being over Rs. 18 million.

Call To Donate By Sri Lanka Insurance, An Outstanding Success

Colombo, 23rd November 2016:  The Call to Donate campaign, launched by Sri Lanka Insurance on November 1, has become an outstanding success, attracting over 500,000 missed calls within the short space of two weeks, long before its deadline of November 30.

This has enabled Sri Lanka Insurance to reach over 500,000 people to engage in this noble cause by taking a few minutes of their time to spread compassion. In return, it will make a donation of five million rupees to the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama towards a much-needed CRRT machine.  “The overwhelming response for Call to Donate shows that it has managed to attract the attention of the public, creating a wave of support and awareness about the needs of the Cancer Institute and the patients receiving treatment there,” a spokesperson for Sri Lanka Insurance said.

The Call to Donate project used the novel mechanism of a ‘missed call’ to get public involvement for the project.

People could give a missed call to the number ‘1357’ and for every such missed call, SLI donates Rs. 10 towards the Cancer Hospital. The caller doesn’t have to make a financial contribution.

The beneficiary of the project would be the children’s ward of the Cancer Hospital. “A team of doctors from the National Cancer Institute including its Senior Consultant in Clinical Oncology Dr. Damayanthi Pieris, who is also President of the Sri Lanka College of Oncologists, and Dr. Deepal Perera, Consultant Paediatrician had identified the needs of the Cancer Hospital. Accordingly, one of the most vital necessities was a CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy) Machine which will support critical cancer patients with their kidney functions. Therefore, we decided to donate a CRRT machine and essential medicines,” the spokesperson said.

The first Call to Donate campaign, which was introduced by Sri Lanka Insurance in November last year, attracted 350,000 missed calls, enabling SLI to donate Rs. 3.5 million towards the Cancer Hospital. Its success prompted the organisation to expand it further to 500,000 calls during this second phase. SLI donated a CPAP machine worth Rs. 775,000, prosthetic limbs worth Rs. 1.8 million, and much-needed medication for cancer patients during the first phase. The CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine allows cancer patients suffering from sleep apnea to breathe easier during sleep. The Cancer Hospital wasn’t equipped with such a machine earlier.

  • 12th Annual International Conference

Microinsurance Goes To The Very Heart And Purpose Of Our Business

The Cinnamon Grand in Colombo seemed extra alive over the past few days as Sri Lanka hosted the 12th International Microinsurance Conference. From the 15th to the 17th of November, more than 400 insurers from over 50 countries and Sri Lanka gatheredto share their views and ideas on the topic of insurance and the development of microinsurance.

Initiated in 2005 by the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network, the purpose of the conference lies in providing insurers, re-insurers, insurance/re-insurance brokers, micro credit agents, insurance regulators, international donor agencies as well as organizations like the World Bank Group and ILO, from all over the globe with a suitable platform to meet, share ideas and experience while learning new and innovative methods to further develop the concept of microinsurance in their own countries. As Mr. Thomas Loster, the Chairman of the Munich Re Foundation stated at the opening ceremony, “We are devoted to aiding those most vulnerable, the poor”.

The opening ceremony took place at 2.00 pm on the 15th of November in the Oak Room of the Cinnamon Grand with the Honorable Minister of Finance, Mr. Ravi Karunanayake taking on the role of Chief Guest and the Chairperson of the IBSL, Mrs. IndraniSugathadasa attending as Guest of Honor.  Stepping up to the microphone Mr. Dirk Perera, the President of the IASL expressed his absolute pleasure to welcome the gathering to the conference as according to him, “Microinsurance goes to the very heart and purpose of our business”. Mr. Perera also thanked the Munich Re Foundation and the Microinsurance Network for the confidence they have shown by selecting the IASL to host the International MicroinsuranceConference for the year 2016 and for the support both organizations have rendered in the organization of the prestigious event.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Loster graciously thanked and acknowledged the contributions made by the IASL since the inception of the conference and stated that he was confident that the Sri Lankan insurance industry was ready to take on a leading role in the global insurance market. The Chairman went on to thank the Microinsurance Network for their support in the endeavor. “Insuring the poor against climate change is one of the matters for which this conference is striving to find solutions,” added Mr. Loster. Mr. Michael McCord, the President of the Microinsurance Network stated that the conference had already proven to be most exciting.
