DJ Mass:Taking The World

By Ryan Johnson

DJ Mass, born in Sri Lanka ‘Straight Outta Borella’, has been living in Singapore for the last two years, with the past 15 years in Dubai. Not only has he worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, but his contributions to the music world and his talent has been recognised by awards such as ABC Radio DJ Of The Year 2000, Palme Me DJ Of The Year 2004, Palme Me DJ Of The Year 2006, Pioneer Me DJ Of The Year 2010, UAE Young Asian Achiever Award Winner 2011, Pioneer DJ Asia Finalist 2012, and Pioneer DJ Rekordbox DJ 2015. He has taken the world by a storm, and is now in the process of creating his own music.

1. How did you get into DJing?

I was into electronics and gadgets at a very young age. Was about nine years
old when I came across a tech magazine which explained how to build a DJ
mixer. What fascinated me was the brief explanation of what DJing was all
about and ever since then I worked my way in to DJing. Went on to building
my very own cassette tape console and created mix tapes “latterly”. :)

2.Tell us a bit about your equipment.
My close relationships with Pioneer DJ has given me the opportunity to
keep myself always updated with the latest gear. Most of the times I’m
lucky enough to get my hands on the equipment prior to release for product
testing. As a part of the Pioneer DJ family we constantly work on
improving the product with info sessions. Currently If I had to name my
favourite among the equipment I use I would have to say it’s the Pioneer DJ
DDJ S9 Mixer.

3.How does it feel to have so many awards under your name?

It feels amazing. Honestly it does, but as much as I look back and smile
with joy thinking of those achievements it was never a walk in the park.
The first time I took part in an international competition in Dubai I
didn’t even have turntables to practice on, I couldn’t afford to buy them
either. A few weeks before the comp I found a pair of turntables thrown
next to a garbage dump on the street I used to live in Dubai. I would like
to think that I was blessed and lucky enough  went on to winning that
competition and a few others. What most people won’t know about me is that
I had very humble beginnings, the hardships and struggles were for real.
What most DJs call it fun was what I called life. I took DJing very
seriously and have always been extremely passionate about it.

4.What is it like DJing in the Middle East and other places in Asia?

It’s an outstanding experience to have travelled and spun at most of the
prestigious venues in the Middle East and Asia. My last residency at
Armani Prive in Dubai was at the world’s tallest building. Zouk Singapore
is one of the world’s longest running top clubs in the world. DJing at
venues such as these were only a dream when I was a child. Guess my
dreams came true.

5.Tell us a bit your own music.

My own music is very trendy and simple as long as it’s happy and appeals
to the masses I guess that’s what I would want to create. I’m an open format
DJ who spins all genres of music and I produce a mix of various genres.
From Chill Trap to Dancehall & House. A feel good vibe with a catchy
melody and the perfect beat can be appreciated by many. I call it Mass
