Qatar Embassy Fumes As Kabir’s Visa Issue Goes Public

by Easwaran Rutnam

The Qatar Embassy in Colombo was fuming last week as news of a delay to issue a visa to the Minister of Public Enterprise Development and General Secretary of the ruling United National Party (UNP) Kabir Hashim for an official visit to Qatar went public.

Well informed sources told The Sunday Leader that angry officials of the Qatar Embassy had contacted Hashim’s Ministry and queried as to why the issue was leaked to the media.

The Ministry had informed the Embassy that the Minister was not happy over the failure by the Embassy to explain the delay to issue the visa which forced him to cancel his official visit to Qatar.

Sources close to the Minister said that he was to visit Qatar last weekend on an invitation extended by the Qatari Minister of Finance.

However the visa was not received on time and several attempts to speak to the Ambassador to have the visa cleared had failed.

“The Qatari Embassy in Colombo failed to issue the visa on time to a senior Minister and that too to a visit he was to undertake at the invitation of their Minister of Finance,” sources said..

The visit to Qatar would have opened up avenues for public private partnerships with Qatari businesses.

Sri Lankan Airlines, Hilton Hotel, Hyatt Hotel, Bank of Ceylon, Sri Lanka Insurance, Lanka hospitals are a few of the Government institutions under Minister Hashim.

Ironically Hashim was the Minister in attendance to the ruler of Qatar on his last state visit to Colombo.

This is a common occurrence in embassies operating in Sri Lanka. They are arrogant and very ineffective thereby negating the purpose of their presence in this country. They should in fact leave Sri Lanka if they are not able to attend to a very simple think like issuing a visa to a senior minister of the Sri Lankan government and that too at the invitation of their own government.

You can imagine what ordinary Lankan citizens are facing at the hands of these foreign embassies manned by these inhuman vultures who treat all lankans like dirt. The minister deserves this. So at least now kick these people out of our country. If not why not?
