Intelligence On Alert Ahead Of Modi’s Visit

by Our Political Correspondent

Intelligence agencies have been placed on alert ahead of the visit to Sri Lanka next month by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sources said that Indian security agencies and Sri Lanka were closely coordinating security arrangements for Modi’s visit.

Intelligence agencies have been alerted of moves by the joint opposition to stage mass protests in Colombo to disrupt Modi’s itinerary.

Modi has confirmed he will visit Sri Lanka to take part in the celebrations marking the UN ‘Vesak Day’, the most important in the Buddhist calendar.

Prime Minister Modi will make his second visit to Sri Lanka in the second week of May. During his visit, he will take part in the UN ‘Vesak Day’ celebrations to be held here from May 12 to 14.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was in India last week to discuss with Modi the Sri Lanka visit and other matters.

President Maithripala Sirisena had proposed last week that Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka be given an additional responsibility to handle any protests which may disrupt daily activities in the country.

Sources said that the responsibility is likely to be given ahead of Modi’s Sri Lanka visit in order to ensure there is no disruption to his program.

Just last week trade unions attached to the petroleum sector launched a strike against moves by the government to reach a deal with India on the Trincomalee oil farm.

The strike was later called off following discussions between the trade unions and the government.
