Choirs Come Together At 11th Festival Of Choirs

The 11th Festival of Choirs, Kandy organized by the Ceylon Bible Society in celebration of the 205th Anniversary was held on Sunday 25th June 2017 at 4.30pm at the Trinity College Chapel, Kandy.

Mrs. Bridget Halpe – the Founder of the Peradeniya Singers and Kandy Junior Singers graced the occasion as the chief guest and the event commenced with the procession which included the following persons: The Emeritus Bishop of Kurunegala Rt. Reverend Kumara Bandara Illangasinghe, members of the Clergy, Principals, Teachers – in – charge and choir Leaders, the Chief Guest, Mrs. Bridget Halpe, and Mrs. Lakshani Fernando, General Secretary of the Ceylon Bible Society. The opening hymn was “Love Divine All Loves Excelling.” Rev.Fr. Lalith Gunathilake, Chaplain Hillwood College & Priest –in-Charge, St. Mark’s church, Katukele offered the opening prayer. Mrs. Lakshani Fernando presented the opening address followed by the message by Mrs. Bridget Halpe. Next was the Bible reading taken from Psalm 126 and read by Miss. Lavanya De Mel Winner Overall Light of the World Speech Contest 2017. A message was given by Rev. Fr. Arunapalam Stephen, from the Theological College of Lanka, Pilimatalawa.

The Choirs participated were Trinity College Kandy, St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, Good Shepherd Convent, Mowbray College, St. Benedict College, Hillwood College, Girl’s High School, Kandy, Methodist College, Wesley College, Bishop’s College Colombo.  The offertory hymn was “Bringing in the sheaves “and the offertory prayer was offered by Mr. Lasantha Tennekoon- Choir master of Trinity College.

The 100 voices came forward for this special event to sing ‘I will Give Thanks To Thee”                                   which was a surprise and tribute to Mrs. Lakshani Fernando. As this was her final program of Festival of Choirs before her retirement in 2018. The choristers of all schools and the congregation joined them.After the final Hymn a speech of Thanks was given by Mrs. Lakshani Fernando, the service ended with a closing Prayer delivered by Rt. Rev. Kumara Bandara Ilangasinghe, Emeritus Bishop of Kurunegala.

It was indeed a moment of Peace, Joy, and Happiness as the Choirs from Heaven joined in singing praises to God Almighty. It was really the sound of Living waters and the sound of worship coming from His throne.
