Army Chief wants data on candidates contesting polls

Army Commander Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake says the Army must have information on the candidates contesting the Local Government (LG) elections.

Speaking to the BBC Sinhala service, Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake said that gathering information on candidates and other key members of society does not mean they are being monitored.

    And so the Army should. Why not? Only the guilty will object. They are Sri Lanka’s Security establishment and should know who is contesting any election
    as any trouble makers could then be traced to the source easily. MM

    Not monitored? What about the army’s performance in the past on this issue? They not only monitored alleged enemies of the nation, but have maintained proxies to have them “disappeared” in casu eliminated without a trace. General Senanayake had better plead for its army members to be better monitored and start investigating the army’s past conduct during the war and beyond.
