Government failed to meet expectations of the public – Nimal Lanza

By Ashanthi Warunasuriya

United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Gampaha District Parliamentarian Nimal Lanza says the Government failed to meet the expectations of the public.

The former Deputy Minister, who had resigned from the Government recently and joined the joint opposition, said that he had decided to leave the Government as the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) failed to withdraw from its agreement with the United National Party (UNP).

Excerpts of the interview:

Q: What was the real reason behind your decision to leave the Government?

When the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United People’s Alliance (UPFA) contested and won the elections in 2015 President Maithripala Sirisena requested us to give him two years to implement the key policies of the Government and address the reconciliation issue.

But after two years we found that what we expected and what the country expected was not met. So last September we urged the President to withdraw from the Government. The President requested us to give him time till December last year.

I decided to resign from the Government as the deadline had lapsed.

Q: But did the President ask for more time?

The President said give time till December 31 last year. We kept telling him the Government cannot continue in this manner.

Q: There are reports you were in touch and had a deal with former President Mahinda Rajapaksa right from the start

There was no need for such a deal. To be frank, even when I was in the Government, Mahinda Rajapaksa gave me advise on taking the SLFP forward. He gave the SLFP guidance even though Maithripala Sirisena was President. So there was no need to have any hidden deals with him

Q: Did you feel you will not be able to win the next election under the SLFP?

No that was not the case. Despite being in power nothing went the way the SLFP wanted. The deals on the Mattala Airport, Hambantota Port and Port City are not deals accepted by the SLFP. The economy of the country as a whole has been turned on its head.

Q: So what do you think you can achieve as a member of the joint opposition?

I initially sat as an independent member of Parliament and now I have joined the joint opposition. The joint opposition is the real opposition. Despite being opposition leader R. Sampanthan is not speaking up against the wrongs committed by the Government. It is the joint opposition which speaks on behalf of the people. As a member of the joint opposition and personally my goal is to meet the expectations of the public.
