Joint opposition claims landslide win at LG elections

By Ashanthi Warunasuriya

The joint opposition claimed it had secured a landslide victory at the Local Government elections and urged its supporters to celebrate the victory without harassing anyone.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) headed by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said it has won most of the local councils it contested at the polls.

Making a special statement, Rajapaksa urged his supporters to celebrate the victory with dignity and not harass those who lost the elections.

“No matter what they did to us we must set an example,”┬áRajapaksa said.

Joint opposition Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa said that the people have spoken their minds and that they want change.

“Thank you to the people of Hambantota and those around the country for this resounding victory for the #SriLanka Podujana Peramuna. The people have spoken their minds. They want change,”┬áNamal Rajapaksa tweeted.

The election is the first election to be held since the current Government came to power in 2015 defeating the administration led by Mahinda Rajapaksa.

  2. Ranil Wickremasinghe should resign, from both as PM and the UNP, along with those who strongly supported him . He has succeeded, as expected, in selling out the country and its law abiding citizens, to the enemies at the gate. In politics is there a word called shame. Only ambition. So was Brutus.
