UNP backbenchers tell PM to form a UNP Government

United National Party (UNP) backbenchers have told Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to form a UNP Government.

UNP Parliamentarian Nalin Bandara said the request was made at a meeting with the Prime Minister and UNP leader at Temple Trees on Tuesday.

Bandara said that the UNP supporters had clearly called for a UNP Government at the just concluded Local Government (LG) elections.

He said that the unity Government idea had not worked and so the UNP has decided it needs to take the country forward over the next two years.

Bandara said the UNP is willing to work with anyone who is prepared to work with the UNP in a single party Government and not a coalition.

The Prime Minister is expected to communicate the party position to President Maithripala Sirisena. (Colombo Gazette)
