Ceylon Hotels Maldives (Pvt) Ltd (CHML, a subsidiary of Ceylon Hotels Corporation Plc, and a member of the Galle Face Group of Companies entered into a 5-50 joint venture with Zhen Hua Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), a group company of the China Habour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC).

Speaking at an event held on Tuesday to mark this great beginning, Galle Face Group Chairman Sanjeev Gardiner said although the CHEC and Galle Face Group already have business interests in the Maldives, this joint venture will provide a strong competitive platform for both parties to enter into the Maldivian leisure sector.

The joint venture will see CHML and ZHEC develop, construct and operate an Upscale Resort of 85 -100 rooms on Ambara Island, Vaavu Atoll in the Maldives. Vaavu Atoll is consistently rated as one of the top ten diving spots in the Maldives. The resort is scheduled to open in 2020. The total project cost is set at US$50 million.

“Joining hands with such a large global entity will provide many opportunities for growth and development of the Galle Face Group, said the Group’s Chairman Sanjeev Gardiner. “This is a unique business proposition because the Galle Face Group as a hotel expert and CHEC as a construction expert create a very exciting synergy, that has a lot of potential for further strategic partnerships in the future,” he said.

Senior Vice President of the Galle Face Hotel Management Company, veteran hotelier Chandra Mohotti, in his introductory remarks, explained that the Galle Face Group has plans to be associated with more international projects in the field of hospitality.
